The Madrasah-Mosque of al-Burtasi carries an inscription on its main gate which gives us the name of its founder and the purpose of its erection. The date of construction is not given, but the information it does provide permits us to infer a more accurate date than the estimate of sometime before 1381 usually given in the literature.

Since the building is clearly identified as a school for the followers of Iman Al-Shafi I, but a school were Friday prayer is also to take place its dual function has led to confusion whenever the building is mentioned. Apparently over time its function actually shifted from school to mosque.

Notable is for its minaret which stands over the entrance and which is decorated in Andalusian style with its double windows. Today the building is unmistakably a mosque.
